Girls' Stories, Girls' Voices
Edgewood
College presents a summer institute designed to encourage girls in grades 6-9 to find their voices. Researchers and social scientists point to the psychological, social and economic importance of young adolescent girls maintaining and sharing their voices. In their works, Carol Gilligan, Annie Rogers and Mary Pipher describe the loss of girls’ voices during their early teens and the consequences of such losses. They each indicate a need for helping this age group of girls see the value in themselves. Participants will deal with these issues using literature, arts, writings, and sharing. “GIRLS CREATING HOPE” will be the theme this summer. The five day workshop will be held at Edgewood College and involves girls in grades 6-9. College and high school students will be facilitators for groups of six to eight girls.
