Increased Staffing Places Emphasis on Community Partnerships and Civic Engagement (10/19/05)

The Human Issues Program recently implemented staffing changes designed to strengthen campus-community partnerships and to increases students’ awareness of and participation in service for justice.

Beginning this fall, Beth Tryon’s position has changed to a full-time, 10-month position, with her additional time focused on cultivating and maintaining community partnerships for student learning. In a collaborative effort between Human Issues and Campus Ministry, 50% of Steve Bullock’s position as Campus Minister for Service will be dedicated to promoting and supporting student social action and reflection, with a particular emphasis on first- and second-year students.

In expressing his excitement about these staffing changes, Dean Pribbenow (Human Issues Director) noted: “Edgewood College’s abiding commitment to inquiry, service, and action for social justice and the public good obligates us to ensure our students are aware of this commitment, and that they are encouraged and supported as they become involved in opportunities to live out this commitment on campus and in the world around them.”

Many positive outcomes and benefits to the campus are expected from these staffing changes and partnerships, including:

  • Increased integration of human issues throughout the curriculum and student experience, especially during students first and second years
  • Increase HI program capacity to implement new initiatives and do grant writing for additional initiatives
  • Increased support of students and faculty engaged in HI studies
  • Expanded and enhanced community partnerships
  • Improved visibility for Edgewood in the community
  • Increased coordination with and support for other campus programs that utilized community partnerships
