BOOKS
Batchelder, Donald and Warner, Elizabeth g., Eds. Beyond Experience: the Experiential Approach to Cross-Cultural Eduation. Brattleboro, VT.: The Experiment Press, 1977. Rooted in the years of preparing and debriefing people learning in other cultures, this Experiment in International Living Book outlines a sophisticated set of concepts and methodologies in cross-cultural education and training which can be useful to service-based learning programs in private liberal arts colleges. The book moves from concept sto practice assessments, all based on practical experience rather than library research.
Eyler, Janet, Giles Dwight E and Astin, Alexander W. Where is the learning in Sevice-Learning? Joseey-Bass, 1999.
Gottlieb, Karla and Robinson, Gail A Practical Guide for Integrating Civic Responsibility into the Curriculum. An 86-page book provides practical, easy-t-use applications for community college faculty to integrate civic responsibility concepts and practices intotheir courses; includes more than 30 to 40 different exercises, activities, and assessment tools. Available in pdf format on the internet at http://www.aacc.nche.edu/Content/NavigationMenu/ResourceCenter/Projects_Partnerships/Current/HorizonsServiceLearningProject/Publications/CR_guide.pdf
Hyde, Lweis. The Gift. New York: Vintage Books, 1979. “What is good is given back.” This phrase introduces this rather ponderous book about how different cultures interpret the giving and receiving of gifts, or in our language, services. In much service-based learning, the concept of reciprocity is used. This book offers a fascinating view of reciprocity, plus much more food for thought as a two why we engage with our sisters and brothers in common acts of work and compassion.
Kupiec, Tamar Y. Ed. Rethinking Tradition: Integrating Service With Academic Study on College Campuses. Providence, R.I.: Campus Compact, 1993.
Lessons from experience of campus teams after participating in workshops designed to develop campus action plans for integrating service with academic study. Useful essays on servic-based learning pedagogy and on institutional development strategies. Appendix outlines 13 examplary syllabi highly applicable to private liberal arts colleges.

Orr, David W. Ecological Literacy: Education and the Transition to a Postmodern World. Albany, N. Y.: State Univesrity of New York Press, 1992.
This book asks us to think institutionally and educationally about what we should be doing and learning given the limits of the earth. As students and faculty engage community residents in common problem solving and learning, the reminders of the limited resoureces available for us all become increasingly important conversation topics. Reading this book will force conversations about the nature of education and the appropriateness now of linking academic learning with the community through student service-based learning.
Schon, Donald. The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action. New York: BasidBoosk, New York, New York, 1983.
-- Educating the Reflective Practitioner. San Francisco: Jowwey-Bass, 1987. Eloquent treatment of how practitioners learn from experience once they have completed their formal educational requirements and begin practicing their craft. Understanding the processes delineated by Schon’s research will enhance the connections between academic learning and service-based learning. Critically imprtant for graduate faculty involved in preparing professionals for service fields.
Schorr, Lisbeth B. Within Our Reach: Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage. New York: Doubleday, 1988.
Presents case after case, experience after experience, where intention and action have been liked to create increased opportunity for citizens who previously had almost no opportunity to grow and develop. Look at these stories and see how your institution and students are viewing these same realities of marginalized peoples and your own role in being alongside them as you both learn and serve.
