Where do I start if I want to do an Independent Study Project?
1) Decide on a topic
Consider something you feel passionate about - something you've studied in class, experienced personally, or observed in society. Come see us for ideas or refinement of an idea if you'd like. Use the resources in the library available through a reference librarian. We also have completed projects here in the HISP office for you to view. - click here to see PDF of Library brochure with some helpful hints.
2) Find a Human Issues advisor to sponsor your project
Any faculty member at Edgewood is eligible - someone who teaches in an area relevant to your project and willing to meet with you through the course of the project to provide direction.
3) Complete the Statement of Intent (SOI) which includes:
Brief description of the project, including the disciplinary "lenses" you'll be using to look at your issue; the experience that will inform your study and demonstrate your values; timeline for your project; reading list, include scholarly references from each of your disciplines.
4)
Complete the Required Forms
• Statement of Intent (SOI) Approval form
• Independent Study Contract form
• Add/Drop form (Enroll in HI 479, totaling a minimum of 3 credits for
