What is the Human Issues Program?

The Human Issues Studies Program (HISP) is a campus-wide academic program designed to link student educational experiences to real, personal and community-based issues.  HISP supports students through the process of designing and completing their Human Issues Studies experience, a graduation requirement for all Edgewood students.  Many tell us that their projects have not only significantly changed how they view the world but have also made a difference in the lives of others.  Promoting deep learning, reflective practice, and community engagement are among the primary goals of this program.

HISP is working to enhance our partnerships with community organizations.  By listening to your needs, we are able to fulfill them with the resources we have available.

We also sponsor a student-led organization, Esperanza.  This club is advised by Elizabeth Tryon of the Human Issues staff, and aims to bring hope to the community by serving those in need, with a specific emphasis on the Latino community of Madison.  We are currently tutoring ESL to Latinos at Edgewood, have sponsored a fundraising campaign to help reforest El Salvador in honor of Bishop Oscar Romero, and work with Centro Guadalupe's homework club and food pantry programs.  For information or to join us, email etryon@edgewood.edu.
